This series consists of an incomplete report of the cashier of the Branch Bank at Mobile to the president and directors of the same Bank on the cotton operation of 1842. It appears that the board of directors of the Branch Bank at Mobile resolved in 1842 Jan. ". . . that it was expedient to purchase cotton, to provide the funds necessary to meet the liabilities of the Bank . . . ." The report discusses the nomination of agents to purchase the cotton, the number of bales of cotton authorized to be purchased, and the number of bales that were shipped to Liverpool. Therefore the Branch Bank at Mobile functioned as a cotton broker. Apparently the actual amount purchased was beyond the amount authorized. The rest of the report is missing and the documents that were to accompany the report are also missing.
